Environmental protection & eco-efficiency
As a print house, we care about our water footprint and place water stewardship in high priority. In order to achieve the best possible colours and finishes, almost all of our print fabrics are digitally printed. This process uses around 60% less water than screen printing. Our suppliers use eco-friendly, low-waste techniques, and water-based dyes.
Of the 51 mills we work with (from 16 suppliers) that specialise in the dyeing, printing and/or finishing of our fabrics, 30 have OEKO-TEX100 certification, and 14 have ISO 14001:2015. Our goal is that 100% of our suppliers will comply with these certifications in future.
While swimwear accounts for a smaller proportion of our range, it remains a key focus for ZIMMERMANN. Our swim hardware, such as the back clasp and sliders, are OKEO-TEX100 certified, and comply with REACH. Additional swimwear trims made from nylon, acrylic, rubber and plastic also have OKEO-TEX100 certification.
Our swim fabrics come from an Italian mill that prioritises sustainable practices, including reduced energy consumption, and high-tech water efficiency, recycling and treatment processes. More than 48% of the water used across their production processes in 2018 was recycled.
Most of our fabrics come from natural fibres, with the highest proportion being silk. We work with a vertical operation silk supplier with its own mulberry plantations and silkworm breeding farms in China. At present, we use regular cotton, but we are looking into various more sustainable alternatives including BCI. We also use linen, which comes from flax - a hardy plant that grows on less fertile soil and requires little or no pesticides. Our use of viscose and polyester is minimal. We have introduced recycled polyester into some of our garment labels. ZIMMERMANN is fur-free, and we do not use angora.
In store, our retail hangers are made from sustainably sourced wooden material. We reuse our B2B hangers many times over. We are currently reviewing our B2B our packaging, and looking at ways to reduce our plastic footprint. Our first step is to reduce the weight of plastic used in our current packaging.
